Border Reporters Criticize Gavin Newsom’s Visit to U.S.-Mexico Border
California Governor Gavin Newsom was criticized by border journalists during his visit to the U.S.-Mexico border, where he claimed to have deployed resources to manage President Joe Biden’s border crisis. This visit happened amid reports that over 10 million undocumented immigrants have entered the U.S. due to the current administration’s policies. Newsom highlighted the deployment of 390 National Guard members to tackle issues such as fentanyl trafficking in California. However, he accused the Republican Party of hindering resource allocation needed to address these issues, urging them to cease politicizing the situation. Newsom’s actions and statements, including a tweet emphasizing the state’s efforts against fentanyl, were met with skepticism by Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin, who reported not seeing any National Guard troops in key areas of illegal crossings.
California Governor Gavin Newsom was called out this week by border reporters after he went to the U.S.-Mexico border and claimed that he has deployed resources to deal with President Joe Biden’s border crisis.
The stunt comes as estimates suggest that more than 10 million illegal aliens have entered the U.S. under the administration due to its open border policies.
“We’re back down here at the border,” Newsom said in a video posted to X. “Now we’re just down here with the National Guard meeting with Customs agents, as well as Border Patrol, talking about our partnerships. We have 390 National Guardsmen and women that have been working particularly as relates it relates to fentanyl here in the State of California.”
Newsom blamed Biden’s border crisis on the Republican Party, claiming that Republicans were depriving officials of the resources that they need to solve the problem even though Republicans have noted that many of the proposals put forth by Democrats will actually make the problem worse.
“It’s time for them to stop playing politics,” he said. “It’s time for the Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, to stop playing politics and do the right thing.”

Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin, who is regularly at the U.S.-Mexico border, responded to Newsom’s video: “Haven’t seen one – not a single one – of these CA National Guard soldiers in Jacumba where the mass illegal crossings of adult men from around the world are taking place.”

“BP there so overwhelmed that the migrants wander aimlessly on highways and call Lyfts for themselves while waiting to be picked up, as San Diego sector now leads the nation in illegal crossings,” he continued. “I sent Gov. Newsom’s below post to a BP agent in Jacumba, who responded by laughing & telling me CA ‘isn’t doing s***’ to help them with illegal crossings there, and any soldiers that they see there are National Guard from other states working w/ DHS under federal Title 10 orders.”
Manny Bayon, the President of the Border Patrol union’s San Diego area representation, told Melugin that he’s never seen California National Guard helping Border Patrol agents.
“California Governor @GavinNewsom refuses to acknowledge the many illegal migrants pouring into California due to his policies he has in place,” Bayon said. “This is also sending a message to the world, come to California, a sanctuary state. We need help in stemming the flow of illegal migrants entering California, not rewarding illegal migrants with taxpayer funded programs.”
“Governor, if you are serious about closing the California/ Mexico border, you would allow CA National guard to help us in enforcement operations,” he continued. “I would be glad to provide you a border tour so you can see for yourself.”
Another border correspondent posted on X that he’s at the border and hasn’t “seen a single CA National Guard over the past week.”
Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders responded: “Did Gavin Newsom suddenly start caring about the border? Or is it just five months before an election and Democrats realized their border crisis is one of their biggest liabilities?”
Former Acting Director of National Intelligence Richard Grenell called Newsom “Baghdad Bob,” a reference to a notorious propagandist for former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.
