Cory Mills presses Border Patrol on alleged mistreatment of veterans
Rep. Cory Mills (R-FL) has expressed serious concerns about the treatment of veterans in the Customs and Border Protection (CBP), as reported by the Washington Examiner. In a letter to CBP Commissioner Troy Miller, Mills highlighted issues such as lack of support for veterans with substance problems or criminal backgrounds, as compared to other CBP employees. He also addressed reports of veterans being unfairly removed from civilian positions or terminated for minor infractions, suggesting that the difficulties veterans face in transitioning from military to civilian life, including challenges like PTSD, are not adequately considered. Mills criticized the Biden Administration for neglecting veterans, both in domestic roles and internationally.
EXCLUSIVE — Rep. Cory Mills (R-FL) is demanding answers from the Customs and Border Protection commissioner after reports of “maltreatment” of veterans.
In a letter sent to Commissioner Troy Miller on Monday, obtained exclusively by the Washington Examiner, Mills wrote that he is concerned military service members are not receiving the same support and resources compared to regular Border Patrol employees with substance problems or criminal history backgrounds.
“There have been concerning reports of maltreatment of veterans within your department, and as a veteran, I’m very interested in identifying and eliminating any discriminatory practices or the perception of maltreatment,” Mills said in the letter.
Veterans have reported being removed from their civilian positions “after numerous requests for protocol clarifications and training guidance, and without corrective action taken by their supervisors prior to termination,” he wrote.
The congressman added that veterans have also been fired from their civilian positions for “minor infractions” they were unaware of due to the “difficulties transitioning” from active duty to civilian life.
In a statement to the Washington Examiner, Mills said it is “appalling but not surprising that the Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) under the Biden Administration is neglecting our veterans.”
“Unfortunately, many veterans struggle with transitioning from military to civilian life due to significant differences in work, routines, and systems,” Mills said. “The shift in changes can be challenging, and many veterans also contend with PTSD, making it even more difficult to adapt to civilian jobs.”
“The current administration has a track record of neglecting our veterans, both internationally and domestically, and fails to prioritize their needs. Our veterans deserve better for their sacrifices to protect our freedoms,” Mills added.
The Washington Examiner reached out to Border Patrol for comment.
Mills is requesting that Miller provide information by June 21 related to the policies and guidance given to veterans to help with transitioning into their civilian jobs, the differences between protection policies with substance abuse problems versus veterans transitioning into civilian jobs, and whether there is a veteran on the termination review board.
“It should go without saying, our nation’s veterans are truly remarkable,” Mills wrote to Miller. “Their dedication, sacrifice, and bravery serve as a testament to their greatness and their love of our nation. These service members are sent into battle abroad, time and time again, to keep us safe at home, and we should always strive to empower these American heroes when they return home and extend grace where needed given the sacrifices they have made.”

“This grace includes providing them with the support and resources to be successful in their transition from active or reserve status into civilian life or federal employment,” the Florida Republican continued.
The Florida congressman is one of several veterans in Congress who have spent much of this session blasting the Biden administration for its treatment of military service members. A group of lawmakers recently introduced a bill that would compensate veterans for certain vaccine-related injuries that were developed under the Defense Department’s COVID-19 mandates.
