Octogenarian Jane Fonda believes Biden is ideally suited for the presidency
Actress and activist Jane Fonda defended President Joe Biden against concerns about his age and mental fitness, asserting that his age should not be a concern and that he is “just fine” to serve another term. While acknowledging that she is not entirely satisfied with Biden, Fonda expressed the necessity of defeating former President Donald Trump and noted her support for Biden is motivated both by support for him and a desire to prevent Trump’s return. Fonda emphasized that with age comes wisdom, and she personally believes Biden is well-suited to be president, stating the country does not need a “demi-god,” but someone capable of leadership. Concerns have been raised about Biden’s mental acuity, especially as he will be 82 at the time of the next election, contrasted with Trump who recently turned 78.

The question on Biden’s mental fitness has been raised by many ahead of the election after numerous clips online showing him standing motionless or wandering away from events. Fonda, 85, said that the age of the oldest president is nothing to worry about.
“I can tell you that you do get wiser, and you do learn things; you learn from your mistakes,” Fonda told CNN. “And I have seen him up close and personal, and he’s fine. He’s perfectly suited to be president of the United States. I don’t know because of, or in spite of the age, he’s just fine, and he’s someone we can work with, and that’s what we need. We don’t need a demi-god.”
Fonda also admitted that she was not “100% happy” with Biden but argued that beating former President Donald Trump was necessary. When asked if her support for Biden is either out of support for the president or a desire to prevent Trump’s return to power, Fonda said it is “a little of both.”
While concerns of age and mental fitness have largely revolved around Biden, who will turn 82 in November, the former president, who turned 78 this month, previously mixed up the names of former Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley and Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA). Trump dismissed this gaffe, claiming he was being sarcastic and that Haley and Pelosi are “interchangeable.”
Polling data released earlier this year, conducted among 528 respondents, indicated most believe both Biden and Trump are too old to serve as president again.

While some have suggested that Biden could get swapped out for another candidate for the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee, this suggestion has been largely dismissed by Democratic lawmakers, with Gov. Wes Moore (D-MD) being the latest to disregard these concerns. The governor’s dismissal was made despite some considering him a possible replacement for Biden.
Trump and Biden are scheduled to debate each other next Thursday on CNN. The network says candidates will not be allowed to bring props or pre-written notes with them, though they will both get two breaks throughout the 90-minute program.
