Trump surpasses Biden in fundraising after hush money conviction

President Joe Biden and the Democratic National Committee raised $85 million in May, a figure that fell short of the $141 million brought in by former President Donald Trump and the Republican National Committee following his hush money conviction.

Biden’s money haul means he started June with $212 million in cash on hand, permitting the campaign to coordinate with the DNC and state Democratic parties to pay more than 1,000 battleground state operatives. It can also run more ads, including $50 million in spending this month alone to coincide with next week’s presidential debate in Georgia.

“Our strong and consistent fundraising program grew by millions of people in May, a clear sign of strong and growing enthusiasm for the president and vice president every single month,” Biden campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez told reporters Thursday.

The Biden campaign described May as the president’s second strongest grassroots fundraising month since he announced his reelection bid in April 2023 and his best month for recurring donor contributions since his launch, adding 3 million more people to his email database.

At the same time, Trump’s May totals mean he has outraised Biden for the second consecutive month. MAGA Inc., Trump’s super PAC, additionally disclosed that it had brought in $68.8 million last month, including a $50 million donation from Timothy Mellon and $5 million each from Richard and Elizabeth Uihlein.

The fundraising performance follows a Manhattan jury convicting Trump of falsifying business records at the end of May, with a showing of support by Republican donors and grassroots supporters who believe the former president was the victim of a politically motivated prosecution by Biden allies.

“Crooked Joe Biden is in a bad place — both politically and cognitively — no matter how hard his allies try to spin it,” a Trump campaign spokesperson told reporters this week. “Americans see it every day — and nothing can change that.”

Democrats, who traditionally outraise Republicans, have already begun to reinforce Biden’s coffers. Aides already report bringing in $40 million in the last week after a finance event with former President Barack Obama and actors George Clooney and Julia Roberts in Los Angeles and one with former President Bill Clinton and one-time Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in Virginia. Former New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg also donated $20 million to his team and an associated super PAC.

“The money we continue to raise matters, and it’s helping the campaign build out an operation that invests in reaching and winning the voters who will decide this election — a stark contrast to Trump’s PR stunts and photo-ops that he’s pretending is a campaign,” Chavez Rodriguez added.
