Warner attempting to get other Senate Democrats to join him in asking Biden to exit race: Report
Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA) is attempting to gather other Senate Democrats to join him in asking President Joe Biden to leave the 2024 presidential race, according to the Washington Post.
He’s telling his fellow Democrats that Biden can no longer keep running in the wake of his abysmal debate performance. Warner has told others that he is deeply concerned that Biden is not able to run a campaign that could beat former President Donald Trump.
“Like many other people in Washington and across the country, Senator Warner believes these are critical days for the president’s campaign, and he has made that clear to the White House,” Warner spokeswoman Rachel Cohen said in a statement to the Washington Post, neither confirming nor denying the report.
The report indicates yet another high-profile Democrat is moving against Biden’s continued candidacy after his CNN presidential debate performance heavily swayed the public toward the opinion that Biden may not be mentally fit for office.
“I think there is a sense among many that the current path may not be sustainable for him,” one Democratic senator, who described the general mood of the caucus, told the Washington Post. “Not because of the debate alone but how well he performs in the future. He obviously has to show strength right now.”
Biden responded to the report on Warner, telling reporters that “he’s the only one.”
Gov. Maura Healey (D-MA) said Biden should “carefully evaluate whether he remains our best hope to defeat Donald Trump,” on Friday, a day after she and other Democratic governors met with the president regarding the uproar.
Biden responded to Healey’s remark, telling reporters, “Maura Healey didn’t say anything when I was in the room, OK?”

Biden told reporters Friday that he’s “completely ruling out” dropping out of the 2024 presidential race.
No Democratic senators have publicly asked Biden to step aside, though a handful of House Democrats have. While Biden still has the public support of large chunks of his party, that support will be put to the test after rank-and-file members can watch his crucial interview on ABC this evening.
