Biden trails Trump by as much as 6 points in battleground states: Poll

A poll sponsored by a Democratic group found President Joe Biden trailed former President Donald Trump by an average of 4 points in six swing states following the first presidential debate.

Trump’s lead over the president in Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan, Arizona, Wisconsin, and Nevada ranged between 1 and 6 points. The poll showed Trump in the best position in Nevada, while he inched past Biden in Michigan. Most of the contests were inside the poll’s margin of error of plus or minus 3 points.

Democrats for the Next Generation, an organization promoting the next crop of Democratic leaders, worked with Emerson College to conduct the poll between June 30 to July 2. Polling was conducted in Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan, Arizona, Wisconsin, and Nevada, with 1,000 respondents in each state.

This poll strays away from other post debate polling including the Bloomberg News-Morning Consult tracking poll released Saturday that showed Biden leading Trump in Wisconsin and Michigan.

Sixty-one percent said that based on Biden’s debate performance, he is too old to be an effective president.

This comes as multiple Democratic members of Congress, political pundits, and news organizations question Biden’s competency and have called for him to step aside to let a younger candidate take the reins.

The poll found that if a younger and qualified candidate replaced Biden, he or she would outperform Trump by 6%. The younger candidate outperforms Biden by 20%.

Democrats for the Next Generation promotes high-profile Democrats including Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI) and Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA), who have both been touted as possible replacements for Biden. The organization has already pledged it would contribute $2 million to fund “mini-primary” debates among qualified Democratic candidates for the presidency.

However, Biden and his campaign team remain steadfast that he is not stepping aside. In a show of resistance on Monday morning, the president called in to Morning Joe and challenged Democrats who want to see him step aside to run against him at the August convention in Chicago.

The Washington Examiner reached out to the Biden campaign for a comment.
