Chip Roy argues DEI is ‘destroying our country’ in criticism of Kamala Harris

Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) reiterated his claim of Vice President Kamala Harris being a diversity hire, arguing that her position in the role is contributing to the United States being destroyed.

Roy stated Monday that the Democratic Party will need to choose between either President Joe Biden or “DEI” Harris as the 2024 presidential nominee, a reference to diversity, equity, and inclusion, prompting Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) to criticize him as “ignorant as all get-out.” The Texas representative contended that Biden was “very specific” in wanting either a woman or a person of color as his vice president and “laid out that this was a DEI process.”

“He didn’t say what I would say or what I think President Trump would say or somebody who believes in American values in saying, ‘I want the best person for the job, regardless of whether they’re a man or a woman, black or white or wherever they come from,’” Roy said on The Dana Loesch Show. “That’s the American way. Their way is un-American. Their way is against freedom and actual equality. They want to set parameters that are exactly what DEI is; DEI is destroying our country. Nobody looks at Kamala Harris and says, ‘Oh man, that’s the best we can do!’ Who in the hell says that?”

Roy continued his criticism by arguing that Harris, the “border czar,” has done nothing to secure the border and “destroy[ed] our country.” He also referenced that Harris’s handling of the border has left many U.S. residents dead, including Georgia nursing student Laken Riley.

The Texas congressman referenced how Dr. Ben Carson was hired for in the Trump administration as secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, arguing he is both a “great guy” and someone who “understands what’s at stake about the soul of America.” He added that he would follow Carson into “any battle he wants to go in.”

“And you know what? He wasn’t a DEI hire,” Roy said. “He was an awesome hire! That guy’s an actual brain surgeon!”

Despite being critical of Harris, Roy announced last month that he plans to file a resolution to call on Harris to execute the 25th Amendment to succeed Biden. Roy cited the president’s performance at the first 2024 presidential debate as evidence he is “not capable” of finishing his term.

Rumblings about Harris potentially replacing Biden have grown since the first debate, with polling data showing her slightly ahead of former President Donald Trump in a hypothetical matchup. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who lost to Trump in the 2016 election, was also slightly ahead.
