Trump’s final VP choices will now have to survive his ‘instinct’
Former President Donald Trump will unveil his running mate in the coming days, but which Republican he picks will have to do with his instinct on the decision.
Trump, speaking on The Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show Friday, said he has gone into detail with all of the contenders but ultimately his instinct will decide who he will select as his running mate against President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris in November.
“I’m going into great detail. But more ultimately, it’s more of an instinct. You develop an instinct, but I like to know all the facts before the instinct kicks in,” Trump said on the radio show.
He also said the people he is considering are “fantastic,” while listing off Sens. Tim Scott (R-SC), Marco Rubio (R-FL), and J.D. Vance (R-OH), along with Gov. Doug Burgum (R-ND).
“I watched Tim Scott on television yesterday, he was fierce and great. He was great. I watched Marco over the weekend on television, he was incredible. J.D.’s has been great. You have a man named Burgum, who is a fantastic governor in North Dakota, and it’s a state that’s very, very prosperous, very successful, and he’s done a good job there,” Trump said.
“You have — you have some terrific people,” he added.
The former president said he would like to unveil who his running mate is at the Republican National Convention or just prior to it. Trump will need to unveil the nominee by Wednesday prior to the roll call for the Republican Party nomination.
“I’d love to do it during the convention, which would be, you know, or just slightly before the convention like Monday. I’d love to do it on Tuesday or Wednesday, actually, but for a lot of complex reasons that you people understand, we pretty much don’t do that,” Trump said.

The RNC begins Monday in Milwaukee and will conclude Thursday evening with Trump accepting the party’s presidential nomination for a third consecutive time.
Over the four-day convention, several figures from Republican politics will address the convention including Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), and whomever Trump’s running mate is. The vice presidential nominee’s speech will immediately follow Donald Trump Jr.’s address to the convention on Wednesday.
