Actress Shannen Doherty, best known for roles in the 1989 film Heathers as well as playing Brenda Walsh on Beverly Hills, 90210 and as Prue Halliwell on Charmed, has died.
Doherty was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015. Two years later, she announced she was in remission. In 2020, Doherty announced the cancer had returned and was at stage four.
“It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of actress Shannen Doherty. On Saturday, July 13, she lost her battle with cancer after many years of fighting the disease,” her longtime publicist Leslie Sloane wrote in a statement on Sunday morning.
“The devoted daughter, sister, aunt and friend was surrounded by her loved ones as well as her dog, Bowie. The family asks for their privacy at this time so they can grieve in peace,” Sloane continued.

Doherty, who is also remembered for roles in films such as, Girls Just Want to Have Fun and Mallrats, last posted on social media in late June. Doherty shared a clip of her podcast where she talked about her cancer battle.
“I have no idea how long I am going to be on the chemo for,” Doherty said. It’s scary, it’s like a big wakeup call. At the same time, I gotta say that there is some positivity there. And the positivity is that because my molecular structure of my cancer cells changed recently, it means there is a lot more protocols for me to try. So for the first time in a couple of months probably, I feel hopeful because there are so many protocols now. Whereas before I was hopeful, but I was also getting prepared.”
