Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee dies at age 74

Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX) died at age 74.

Her death was announced in a statement from her family.

“A fierce champion of the people, she was affectionately and simply known as ‘Congresswoman’ by her constituents in recognition of her near-ubiquitous presence and service to their daily lives for more than 30 years,” the statement read.

Her death came just over one month after announcing that she had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

“My doctors have confirmed my diagnosis of pancreatic cancer,” she wrote on X in early June. “I am currently undergoing treatment to battle this disease that impacts tens of thousands of Americans every year.”

Lee had won her primary in March and was set to run against Republican challenger Lana Centonze.

The Texas Democrat was a significant presence in Congress for 30 years.
