‘White Dudes for Harris’ Zoom fundraiser aims to shore up support among Democrats’ weakest demographic – Washington Examiner
The article discusses a recent Zoom fundraiser titled “White Dudes for Harris,” aimed at garnering support for Vice President Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign from a demographic that has traditionally leaned Republican—white men. Scheduled for 8 p.m. Eastern, the event anticipated over 90,000 participants, with renowned figures like Mark Ruffalo and Mark Hamill expected to attend. The initiative, founded by Mark Greene, seeks to challenge the prevailing “Man Box” culture that often marginalizes men and contributes to social issues. Historically, there is a notable disparity in political affiliation between white men and women; recent statistics show only 37% of white men identify with the Democratic Party. Moreover, a poll indicated that fewer men would vote for Harris compared to Trump. The fundraiser aims to reverse declining support among white male voters, especially following a notable decrease in their turnout in key states during the last election, which ultimately contributed to Biden’s victory. Current polling suggests a continued decline in favorability for Trump among this demographic, emphasizing the urgency of engaging white male voters for Harris’s campaign.
‘White Dudes for Harris’ Zoom fundraiser aims to shore up support among Democrats’ weakest demographic
The latest Zoom fundraiser organized for Vice President Kamala Harris’s presidential election campaign aims to boost support from a demographic that has historically favored Republicans: “White Dudes.”
The Zoom call, scheduled for 8 p.m. Eastern on Monday, had more than 90,000 people registered. Greene’s goal was to see 10,000 signups. Famous white men will join, including Mark Ruffalo, Mark Hamill and Sean Astin. Potential vice presidential picks Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, and Govs. Tim Walz (D-MN) and J.B. Pritzker (D-IL) are also expected to join.
“For too long, Man Box culture has positioned white men at the top of a bullying and rigid dominance -based culture of masculinity which teaches us that the only power that matters is power we create over others,” founder Mark Greene wrote. “The result has been an economic, political and environmental disaster.”
“White Dudes for Harris” is hoping to play a “positive role” in Harris’s election efforts.
Historically, there’s been a gap between white men and white women when it comes to political affiliation. As of 2017, 48% of white women identified with the Democratic Party, compared to 37% of white men who considered themselves to be Democrats.
A recent poll found that 39% of men said they would vote for Harris while 47% said they would vote for Trump.
White male voters have been a consistently strong voting bloc for former President Donald Trump. However, compared to 2016, there was a drop in the demographic’s voter turnout in 2020 in key swing states such as Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan. Ultimately, these states were won by Biden, thus granting him the presidency.
Polling conducted in Wisconsin from late 2023 to early 2024, reveals Trump’s net favorability rating among white men dropped 22 points, from plus eight points to minus 14 points.
Part of the appeal to choosing Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) was to reignite white male voters.
“You need a white guy to get the white guys we lost. The Hillbilly Elegy guy is the one to do it,” MAGA political operative Vish Burra told the Bulwark. “Trump needs Vance because he’s good on camera and he sounds right. He’s not one of these people you can dismiss as a MAGAloid or a barbarian.”
White Dudes for Harris have stated their biggest grievances with Trump, Vance, and MAGA Republicans are “criminalizing abortion, failing to protect IVF, threatening birth control, threatening no fault divorce.”
However, the 2024 Republican Party platform states it would protect in vitro fertilization treatment, and Trump has said he is opposed to a national abortion ban.
Last week, “White Women: Answer the Call” had 160,000 women on the Zoom fundraiser for Harris. They raised millions of dollars and broke Zoom.
