Conservative commentators believe Tim Walz as Harris’s running mate is ‘a relief’

Vice President Kamala Harris‘s running mate selection of Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) on Tuesday has excited many Democrats, but it also gave many conservative commentators a sense of relief.

Between the two reported finalists for Harris’s vice presidential nominee, conservative personalities appeared more concerned about Gov. Josh Shapiro (D-PA) appearing on the ticket than Walz. When the announcement came down on Tuesday, former Trump White House adviser Kellyanne Conway posted, “What a relief.”

Podcast host Ben Shapiro, of no relation to the Pennsylvania governor, outlined why he believed picking Walz was “political malpractice,” listing that he is not from a swing state and is a “radical.” Ben Shapiro also speculated that by not picking Josh Shapiro, who is Jewish, it was a concession to anti-Israel factions of the Democratic Party.

“As someone who wants Kamala to lose, picking Walz is wonderful!” Ben Shapiro said in a post. “It’s political malpractice! Why? 1. Not from a swing state. 2. Radical, underscoring her radicalism. 3. She rejected [Josh Shapiro] to please the pro-Hamas caucus. She’s not competent. And this pick shows it.”

Even conservative commentators who are deeply critical of former President Donald Trump believed Walz was not a strong pick for Harris.

“I knew next to nothing about Tim Walz before this week and listened to several interviews, podcast, did research,” Meghan McCain, the daughter of the late Sen. John McCain, said in a post on X. “He is no moderate, and no uniter. In fact you would be hard pressed to find a more extreme progressive running mate. He is a Trojan horse with a red state accent.”

Former Trump White House official Alyssa Farah Griffin, who is now no fan of her former boss, called out Walz’s comments last week saying that “one person’s socialism is another person’s neighborliness” as being “radioactive” with swing voters.

“The clip of Tim Walz saying ‘one person’s socialism is another person’s neighborliness’ will be played on loop in swing states from now until Election Day,” Farah Griffin said in a post on X. “We’re ~90 days out! That’s radioactive with swing voters.”

She also reacted to the news in an earlier post by calling the selection “an extraordinary missed opportunity.”

Harris and Walz will make their first appearance together since the Tuesday morning announcement later in the day at a rally in Philadelphia.
