Midwest mayhem: Protesters plan for big week of disruption at DNC – Washington Examiner
The upcoming Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago is expected to be marked by significant celebrations and a strong push from Democrats in anticipation of the November elections. However, this atmosphere may be disrupted by planned protests, particularly on the first and last days of the event, focusing on issues such as U.S. support for Israel amid its conflict with Hamas. Despite changes in candidates, with President Joe Biden having dropped out and Vice President Kamala Harris now the nominee, organizers, primarily from the “March on the DNC 2024,” are determined to proceed with their demonstrations.
Protesters are advocating for several demands, including an end to U.S. aid to Israel and expanded rights for illegal immigrants. They are mobilizing support from various Midwest states critical to the upcoming elections, emphasizing a collective stance against the Democratic Party’s policies. Concerns regarding uncommitted delegates also loom as part of the ongoing dialogue within the party. the DNC is anticipated to experience both celebratory moments and significant dissent during this pivotal week.
Midwest mayhem: Protesters plan for big week of disruption at DNC
This week’s Democratic National Convention in Chicago will bring celebration and a major pitch by Democrats for the November election, but expected protests could throw a wrench into those plans.
Demonstrations were planned while President Joe Biden was the likely Democratic nominee, and after he dropped out of the race and Vice President Kamala Harris became the nominee, organizers said they would still proceed. The main protests are expected on Monday and Thursday, the first and final days of the DNC, respectively.
March on the DNC 2024 has been the main organizer, but several groups plan to demonstrate. The protests largely surround the U.S.’s support for Israel while the Jewish state is at war with Hamas, demanding the U.S. to stop sending aid and support to Israel, along with other progressive demands such as expanded rights for illegal immigrants.
Protest organizers are busing in people from several Midwest states central to November’s election, including Michigan and Wisconsin, according to Politico, with uncommitted delegates still a looming threat to Democrats.
The group has argued that Democrats “are all complicit” in the “genocide in Gaza,” referring to the war between Hamas terrorists and Israel. Protests will take to the streets on Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday, with the ones organized by the March on the DNC 2024 taking place at 12 p.m. on Monday and 5 p.m. on Thursday. Harris is expected to accept the party’s nomination on Thursday night.
The protesters have battled with Chicago city officials over permits, seeking to get closer to the convention grounds, though a federal judge ruled last week in favor of officials, altering the route of which protest organizers sought to obtain permission.
Harris may have to win over the protesters to win the key states in the election, with her handling a protester at a Michigan rally earlier this month who was discussing the war in Gaza.
The DNC will begin on Monday with Biden, Harris, and Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) and others speaking as the party gears up for the pivotal election in November.
