Democrats see their presidential chances rise but are still hampered by familiar issues – Washington Examiner

A recent poll ⁣indicates that Vice President Kamala Harris is currently outperforming former President Donald Trump in presidential ⁣race projections, leading him ⁣49% to 45% among registered voters. However, the⁤ poll, conducted by ⁢ABC News-Washington Post-Ipsos, highlights⁣ significant challenges for Harris, as she ⁤trails Trump in critical areas, specifically the ⁣economy and immigration, where Trump holds ⁣a 9% and 10%⁣ lead respectively. These concerns echo⁣ similar issues identified during Joe ⁢Biden’s candidacy. On ⁣the⁤ positive side, Harris does have a lead over ⁢Trump regarding healthcare, gun violence, and abortion, which were also strengths for‍ Biden ⁣in earlier polling.

Democrats see their presidential chances rise but are still hampered by familiar issues

Vice President Kamala Harris has taken a lead over former President Donald Trump in most recent presidential polls, but a new survey shows that Democrats are dealing with several of the same issues they were when President Joe Biden was the presumed nominee.

An ABC News-Washington Post-Ipsos poll released on Sunday shows Harris leading Trump among registered voters 49%-45%, but it also shows Harris trailing Trump on trust with pivotal topics such as the economy and immigration.

Trump holds a 9% lead over Harris in handling the economy, 46%-37%, while with immigration, Trump holds a 10% advantage over Harris, 46%-36%. Both margins are similar to when Biden was the presumptive nominee in July, according to the pollster.

Harris does have an edge over Trump on healthcare, gun violence, and abortion, all areas Biden also had an advantage over Trump in the July poll.

Two areas that Harris has recently focused on still show Trump with an edge: inflation and crime. Harris has leaned into her time as San Francisco district attorney and California attorney general to convey a tough on crime attitude, but she trails Trump on the matter by 3%.

The vice president also trails Trump on inflation by 9%, as Harris tries to tout her plan to combat rising prices by aiming to outlaw so-called price gauging. The plan outlined by Harris last week has received significant pushback, with some comparing the proposal to price controls.

Harris and Democrats will take the stage at the Democratic National Convention this week in Chicago as they make their pitch to voters for November.

Trump and Harris will hold their first-ever one-on-one debate on Sept. 10. According to the Harris campaign, another debate in October is still possible.
