Former President Donald Trump stepped out from behind his newly added bulletproof glass surrounding his podium to go help a rally attendee who was in need of medical attention.
During his campaign speech before a crowd in Asheboro, North Carolina, the former president was telling a story about how he sometimes sponsors athletes, including golfers and UFC fighters.
He paused to turn to look at commotion taking place to the left side of his podium. The crowd was heard yelling for a medic to help the rallygoer having an medical incident.
“A doctor, please,” Trump asked looking into the crowd.
“You’re getting them too worked up, Mr. President!” a man is heard yelling from the audience.
“It is very hot here, I notice. It is very hot. A lot of the people waited for days to get here. I understand it,” the former president said.
As medical personnel went to help a white-haired woman down from the stands, who had apparently collapsed, Trump thanked them for helping.
“Take your time, doctor. Take your time. Thank you,” he said.
The Republican presidential nominee then left his bulletproof protection to go into the crowd at the outdoor rally. While he was surrounded by Secret Service agents, he shook the elderly woman’s hand and gave her a hug as he checked on her.
The woman repeatedly thanked him for coming to speak to her as she was recovering with a water bottle in her hand.
The crowd burst into “We love Trump!” chants.
After he returned to the stage, Trump said, “You know, they come two, three days early, and it’s a lot of stress, we lose them. The only ones we don’t lose are the front row Joes, I don’t know what they have going, they have something going here.”
Secret Service had recommended to the former president that he limit open-air rallies after the July 13 assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania. Within weeks after the shooting, Trump vowed to continue appearing at outdoor rallies and Secret Service made a plan to “step up” their operation at outdoor events. Wednesday’s rally was his first outdoor rally since his attempted assassination.
