Maryland Democrats clap back at Larry Hogan with opposition website
The Maryland Democratic Party recently launched a new opposition website targeting Republican Senate candidate Larry Hogan after Hogan himself created a satire site against Democratic rival Angela Alsobrooks. The Democratic site, titled “republicanlarryhogan.com,” aims to portray Hogan, a former centrist governor, as an extreme conservative who could significantly influence the Senate’s agenda, particularly regarding contentious issues like abortion.
In a closely watched and competitive race for an open Senate seat left by retiring Democrat Ben Cardin, Hogan and Alsobrooks are currently in a dead heat, according to a recent poll, with both candidates at 46%. This election is deemed crucial for Democrats, who require victories in Maryland and several other states to maintain their Senate majority.
The opposition site highlights Hogan’s past connections with prominent Senate Republicans, including Mitch McConnell, and underscores his positions on key issues such as abortion, gun control, and environmental policies. Hogan, however, has been seen as more moderate compared to many of his Republican colleagues, especially regarding abortion rights.
Maryland Democrats clap back at Larry Hogan with opposition website
The Maryland Democratic Party on Tuesday launched an opposition website against Republican Senate nominee Larry Hogan after the former governor launched a satire site against Democratic rival Angela Alsobrooks.
The new website, republicanlarryhogan.com, casts the former two-term centrist GOP governor as a radical conservative who would “give Republicans the 51st seat they need to push forward an extreme agenda that’s out of touch with Marylanders, including banning abortion nationwide.”
The closely watched race between Hogan and Alsobrooks, the executive of Prince George’s County, is a surprisingly competitive contest in a deep-blue state that could determine control of the Senate.
The two are vying for an open seat to replace retiring Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD). Democrats must win Maryland and seven other competitive seats to hold the majority with a 50-50 split.
A new poll released Tuesday showed Hogan and Alsobrooks in a dead heat with both of them at 46%. The survey, commissioned by AARP Maryland, showed Hogan vastly outperforming former President Donald Trump’s 32% to Vice President Kamala Harris’s 64%.
Maryland Democrats’ site makes reference to Hogan’s recruitment by Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and the endorsements he’s received from many Republican senators. It also highlights hot-button issues like abortion, gun control, entitlements, and environmental protections.
The Alsobrooks campaign is not associated with the site.
Hogan has maintained more centrist positions on such issues than most Senate Republicans, particularly on abortion access, which he supports codifying into law in a post-Roe v. Wade era.
The Hogan campaign declined to comment.
His campaign last month delivered tongue-in-cheek accolades to criticize Alsobrooks and tout his middle-of-the-road style of politicking with an opposition site modeled after her real site. Hogan’s is cloaked in her campaign’s signature lime green and black color scheme that bears a nearly identical domain name, angelaalsobrooks.org, not to be confused with the real angelaalsobrooks.com.
On the tied polling, Hogan said in a statement that the “palpable enthusiasm of Maryland voters for independent leadership has given our campaign real momentum, and the chance to defy the odds.”
Nonpartisan election forecasters still give an overall advantage to Alsobrooks, who held an average lead prior to the latest survey of around 8 percentage points.
