Four people killed in Chicago train shooting
Four passengers were shot during a fatal attack on a train on the Blue Line in Chicago early Monday morning, according to police.
Three of the passengers died at the scene, and a fourth was taken to the hospital, where they died from their injuries, Forest Park Police Department Deputy Chief Christopher Chin said at a press conference.
Chin said the suspect fled the scene but that after reviewing surveillance footage, police were able to locate him and take him into custody. The alleged offender is being held at the Forest Park Police Department.
“There is no immediate threat,” Chin said. “This appears to be an isolated incident on this unfortunate day.”
Chin said the suspect’s weapon was recovered and that the shooting remains under investigation.
Police received a 911 call shortly before 5:30 a.m. about the shooting, which occurred on a Chicago Transit Authority train that was inbound for Forest Park, the deputy chief said. He acknowledged that it was “horrible” to have the tragedy occur on Labor Day, when people are “supposed to be enjoying their time off, time with their families.”
Chicago’s grim violent crime rates have long been a source of scrutiny. The city saw a slight drop in homicides in 2023, but it ended the year with 617, which was still among the most it had seen on an annual basis in the last 20 years.
