Gov. Josh Shapiro (D-PA) praised Democrats and President Joe Biden as the nation’s true patriots on Friday, declaring that his party has massive momentum heading into November.

“Joe Biden is a great patriot. He has been for decades, and he showed tremendous leadership,” Shapiro told the hosts of ABC’s The View after co-host Sunny Hostin compared Biden’s exit from the presidential race to the actions of former President George Washington.

“There is real momentum,” the governor continued. “Folks are fired up, and, listen, it’s not just folks who are going to vote for Kamala Harris based on polls and based on, you know, what they’re raising their hands and saying. It’s the energy around what happens when you put a sign on your lawn, when you give a permission slip to your neighbor.”

Shapiro appears to still be riding high after his speech at the 2024 Democratic National Convention. He said the energy he felt in Chicago is still reverberating around the nation and his state.

“I see a whole lot of Harris signs going up across Pennsylvania,” he said. “For as much as the ads are important, for as much as the speeches are important, when your neighbor walks over to you and says, ‘Yo, I’m for Kamala, and here’s why,’ that has a huge impact on the race.”

Co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin pointed out that Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign is unlike prior bids for the presidency, citing her sudden changing attitudes on myriad issues, including fracking.

The Harris campaign has provided little explanation for this flip-flopping, but Shapiro covered for it by saying that changing one’s opinions is not a sign of weakness.

“I think it’s a sign of strength when you evolve on a position,” he said. “Clearly, Kamala Harris has been listening to the good people of Pennsylvania when it comes to natural gas, when it comes to energy, and the fact that we’re producing more energy in this nation today than ever before.”

That production strengthens national security and the economy, Shapiro said.

“She understands that,” he said. “She has listened, and I think that’s important. Look, I’ve changed my views on things. I ran in support of the death penalty, and after being attorney general, top prosecutor in Pennsylvania, I changed my views on that when I finally really understood some of the challenges.”
