An explosion at a California courthouse Wednesday injured several people in the Santa Maria area.

Police have detained a suspect, an adult male, who allegedly set an “improvised explosive device” in the courthouse. Authorities interviewed him Wednesday night.

Five people are being treated at a local hospital for their injuries.

“Of these, three are in fair condition, while two are in good condition,” a Marian Regional Medical Center spokesperson told CNN. “We are providing them with the highest level of care and support.”

“The Sheriff’s Department is aware of an explosion in the Santa Barbara Court House today and are monitoring the situation,” the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department posted on X. “The Department provides security for 37 courthouses in Los Angeles County. As a precaution we are on heightened alert and providing extra patrols in and around our courts. At this time there are no credible threats to any courthouses in Los Angeles County.”

Other public buildings in the area, including the public library and other city offices, are closed for the day. Roads surrounding the courthouse have been closed, and the public has been advised to avoid the area.

Additional details about the explosion have not been released, and a motive is still being determined.

Another instance of courthouse violence occurred recently when a Kentucky sheriff allegedly shot and killed a district court judge. He has pleaded not guilty to the crime.
