The newest film from Angel Studios recounts the true story of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a German theologian who opposed his country and church’s embracement of antisemitism in the 1930s and 1940s.

The film, Bonhoeffer: Pastor. Spy. Assassin., focuses on Bonhoeffer, portrayed by Jonas Dassler, and his return to Germany after living in the United States. Upon seeing the racial discrimination against the Jewish people spread by then-rising politician Adolf Hitler, Bonhoeffer chooses to take a stand within the German church to oppose Hitler’s influence, eventually getting involved in a failed assassination attempt on the Fuhrer.

“I hope it inspires youth and everybody and demonstrates the courage of this man,” Emmanuel Kampouris, one of the producers of the film, told the Washington Examiner. “It’s very uplifting, and especially in today’s environment. You see a very truthful man who saw the world as it was and stood up to what was evil, essentially, and spoke the truth.”

Camille Kampouris, Emmanuel Kampouris’s wife and co-producer, explained she and her husband are both Christians, and they hope this film will “raise up” modern young men and women to speak up and oppose evil, even if it means paying “the ultimate price.”

The film’s release comes as antisemitism has grown exponentially in the United States and across the world, including the Oct. 7 attack by the Hamas terrorist group against Israel. Camille Kampouris explained she and her husband saw a growth in antisemitism when they started working on this film 12 years ago and called it “God’s timing” that it’s releasing later this year.

Bonhoeffer: Pastor. Spy. Assassin. is set to release on Nov. 22.

The film will mark the latest entry in Angel Studios’s catalog. The studio is best known for releasing Sound of Freedom last year, which was based on the true story of Tim Ballard, who quit his Department of Homeland Security job to rescue children overseas from human trafficking. The film grossed more than $184 million in the U.S. and over $250 million worldwide.

Additional theatrical showings by Angel Studios include Sound of Hope: The Story of Possum Trot, which detailed the true story of Bennett Chapel Missionary Baptist Church adopting over 70 children, and Cabrini, which told the true story of Francesca Cabrini, a Catholic missionary who sought to convince the mayor of New York City to provide housing and healthcare to those in need.
