Country singer and actor Kris Kristofferson dead at 88

Country singer-songwriter and actor Kris Kristofferson died on Saturday at his home in Maui, Hawaii. He was 88 years old.

His wife, eight children, and seven grandchildren confirmed his death in a statement on Sunday.

“It is with a heavy heart that we share the news our husband/father/grandfather, Kris Kristofferson, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Sept. 28 at home. We’re all so blessed for our time with him. Thank you for loving him all these many years, and when you see a rainbow, know he’s smiling down at us all,” the statement said.

Kristofferson’s songwriting included songs like “Me and Bobby McGee,” “For the Good Times,” and “Sunday Mornin’ Coming Down.” He was also part of a country music group called the Highwaymen, which included fellow artists Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, and Waylon Jennings.

Kristofferson was also known as an actor, starring in the 1976 version of A Star is Born, Heaven’s Gate, which notoriously flopped, and the Blade trilogy. He won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor for his performance as a self-destructive rock star in A Star is Born.

Kristofferson was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2004.
