Google will block all ads related to the election after polls close on Nov. 5.
It’s the company’s effort to curb the spread of misinformation and disinformation related to the election.
“As we’ve done in the past, we will temporarily pause ads related to U.S. elections after the last polls close on November 5,” Google spokesman Michael Aciman told the Hill. “We’re implementing this policy out of an abundance of caution and to limit the potential for confusion, given the likelihood that votes will continue to be counted after Election Day.”
While ads will be blocked, Google will still run public advertisement campaigns created by federal agencies that address how the election results are being processed.
Google’s previous ban on election ads, taking place after the 2020 election, lasted until December. However, the company reinstated the advertisement ban following the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot, with that pause in place until February.
Meta has previously shared that it will also be blocking political advertisements the week of the election.
