MSNBC host Mika Brzezinski slammed former President Donald Trump’s historic Madison Square Garden event in New York by calling it “weird” and a “white nationalist Nazi-type rally.”
Brzenzinski appeared on The View on Monday where co-host Ana Navarro asked her about the “Trump rally from hell at Madison Square Garden.”
“I think it was everything that you need to know about Donald Trump in one weird, white nationalist, Nazi-type rally, and of course, there’s historic parallels to where and when this happened,” Brzezinski said.
The Morning Joe host’s reference is a common refrain of her network MSNBC, which received harsh criticism after editing Nazi rally clips into its coverage of Trump’s rally at Madison Square Garden on Sunday.
The network and Brezinski are likely alluding to a 1939 Nazi rally in New York at a venue called “Madison Square Garden.” However, it was not the same location.”
The “Madison Square Garden” venue that hosted the Nazi rally in 1939 was on the west side of Eighth Avenue between 49th and 50th streets in Manhattan and closed in 1968. The current Madison Square Garden arena resides between Seventh and Eighth avenues from 31st to 33rd streets above Pennsylvania Station and is the fourth venue to bear the name.
Previous presidents, former President Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter, both accepted their Democratic presidential nominations at Madison Square Garden.
Earlier, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) appeared on Brzezinski’s MSNBC show to slam the Trump rally.
“This was not just a political rally. This was also not just a campaign rally. I think it’s very important for people to understand that these are mini-January 6 rallies,” the New York congresswoman said.
Brzezinski said on Morning Joe that she found it “discouraging that so many people would gather and rally to hate to hate speech in America.”
The Hitler and Nazi references about the former president have grown in the final weeks of the election when a report was published by The Atlantic sharing claims by Trump’s former chief-of-staff, four-star Marine Corps. Gen. John Kelly that Trump had once praised Adolf Hitler and his generals.
Trump aides denied Kelly’s accounts and the former president said he “fired him,” calling him a “bad guy.”
Last week, Vice President Kamala Harris used Kelly’s comments to attack Trump.
“It is deeply troubling and incredibly dangerous that Donald Trump would invoke Adolf Hitler, the man who is responsible for the deaths of 6 million Jews and hundreds of thousands of Americans. All of this is further evidence into who Donald Trump really is,” Harris said Wednesday at her vice presidential residence on the grounds of the U.S. Naval Observatory.
