Libya has become a major transit hub for migrants fleeing conflict and poverty in Africa and the Middle East. In recent months, there have been other similar incidents, including a capsize last month that left one dead and 22 missing. Human traffickers exploit the turmoil in Libya, often loading migrants onto overcrowded and inadequately equipped boats for perilous sea journeys.
As of this week, the International Organization for Migration has reported 531 migrant deaths and 754 missing individuals on the Central Mediterranean route in 2024. The previous year saw 962 deaths and 1,563 missing cases. In total, around 17,200 migrants were intercepted and sent back to Libya in 2023, underscoring the ongoing dangers faced by those attempting to reach Europe.

Human traffickers have long taken advantage of instability in Libya that escalated after a NATO-backed uprising overthrew and killed longtime leader Moammar Gadhafi in 2011. Traffickers smuggle migrants on crammed, poorly equipped vessels on risky sea trips across the North African nation’s borders, which are d with six countries.
