‘Trump dance’ takes over NFL amid concerns league could ban the celebration – Washington Examiner
The article discusses the phenomenon of NFL players imitating the dance moves of President-elect Donald Trump in their celebrations after touchdowns. This trend has sparked concerns on social media about the possibility of the NFL considering a ban on these celebratory dances. The surge in these dances coincided with Trump’s electoral victories in the recent elections. The piece also mentions an incident involving Brock Bowers of the Las Vegas Raiders during a postgame press conference, where his discussion about the Trump-inspired dance led to the abrupt end of the media session, suggesting sensitivity around the topic. Various players have been seen adopting these moves, exemplifying the intersection of sports and political cultural expressions.
‘Trump dance’ takes over NFL amid concerns league could ban the celebration
As more NFL players are captured impersonating President-elect Donald Trump‘s dance, concerns have arisen on social media that the league could be getting ready to announce a ban on the Trump’s signature moves.
Ever since Trump swept the Nov. 5 election in terms of electoral votes and the popular vote, a number of athletes, particularly in the NFL, have celebrated by dancing as the president-elect did at his rallies.
However, when Brock Bowers of the Las Vegas Raiders was asked Sunday about the dance, his postgame press conference abruptly ended. USA Today reporter Safid Deen was the one who posed the question and suggested it was the reason the press conference was cut short.
“I’ve seen everyone do it,” Bowers said, according to Deen. “I watched the UFC fight last night, and Jon Jones did it. I like watching UFC, so I saw it and thought it was cool.”
The Washington Examiner reached out to the NFL for comment.
In the past, the NFL has disavowed political protest, such as the movement in 2016 that had many players, including Colin Kaepernick, kneeling during the national anthem. By 2018, the league required all players to stand for the anthem.
Bowers followed the Tennessee Titans’ Nick Westbrook-Ikhine and Calvin Ridley, the San Francisco 49ers’ Leonard Floyd, Sam Okuayinonu, and Nick Bosa, and the Detroit Lions’ Malcolm Rodriguez and Za’Darius Smith in imitating the dance. Clips of other athletes and celebrities dancing similarly have been circulated by Trump’s campaign and supporters.
Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) shared one such compilation on X Sunday with the caption: “Make America Fun Again.” That video has over 2.5 million views.
