Nancy Mace becomes target of protests against transgender bathroom ban
Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) faced oppositional flyers and voicemails Thursday as a result of her stance against transgender women in the Capitol’s women’s restrooms.
Mace is pursuing a resolution to ensure that only biological women are allowed in women’s restrooms. That comes on the heels of Rep.-elect Sarah McBride (D-DE) becoming the first transgender person elected to Congress. While the resolution will not be put to a vote until the next Congress convenes in January 2025, Mace is already receiving backlash.
One women’s bathroom in the Capitol was decorated with flyers featuring the transgender flag. The flyers were clearly targeting Mace as they also featured the phrase, “You can’t erase us Nancy.” Mace took a video of herself pulling them off the wall.
“Well, then you shouldn’t try and erase women,” Mace responded. “I have to say for any man that wants to be in a women’s restroom, bathroom, dressing room, locker room: absolutely not.”
The South Carolina representative also posted two voicemails left at her office rampant with graphic language and threats. Among many insults, the caller refers to Mace and her staff as “white trash Nazi motherf***ers.” This person’s phone number was also posted to Mace’s X account, with Mace’s recommendation that they change their number.
“Now my employees are being threatened,” Mace captioned the clip. “Here’s my response: F*** You.”
This comes after Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and other House Democrats condemned Mace’s resolution. Former CBS News anchor Katie Couric also took a swipe at Mace in a video posted to her Instagram story on Wednesday.
“I’m just so disappointed that this Nancy Mace, a Republican from South Carolina, is being so rude and, I don’t know, just bigoted against Sarah McBride who is a new congressperson from the state of Delaware,” Couric told her 1 million followers. “It just seems nasty and mean and cruel because she is the only member who is now forbidden to use the ladies’ room. And it’s just s***ty.”
Mace has stood firm on her stance. She said her passion behind the effort comes from her experience as a rape survivor. Now, she is floating similar bans in all federal buildings.
