Fetterman told the New York Times that the Left turned off young voters by being “insulting” and condescending toward them, “telling them that ‘I know better than you do,’” which he said is “not helpful.”

His advice for Democrats going forward is to stop shutting down dialogue, but to instead “have a conversation.”

“Have a conversation with anyone that’s willing to have an honest conversation,” he said. “That’s always been the rule, and that’s what I’m going to continue.”

The first-term senator recalled a 2016 event with steel workers where he noticed “at that time that people were voting for Trump.”

“And the Democrats’ response was, ‘Aren’t they smart enough to realize they’re voting against their interests?’” he said. “And that’s insulting, and that’s, I mean, that’s, that’s just not helpful. It’s condescending. And if anything, that reinforces that kind of stereotype.”

Part of Trump’s strategy for leaning into the male vote in 2024 involved going on the podcasts most popular with young male voters. These include Joe Rogan’s podcast, Theo Von’s, Logan Paul’s, Lex Friedman’s, as well as Bussin’ With the Boys, and others. He also did a livestream interview with Adin Ross, who is a popular video game streamer. 

These appearances racked up tens of millions of views, and they were largely coordinated by Trump’s youngest son Barron, who recently turned 18.

According to the Associated Press, Trump took 53% of support with men ages 18-44 and 57% with men 45 and older in 2024. In 2020, he only got 45% and 55%, respectively, showing a much larger shift with younger men.

Trump received 60% of white male support, 25% of black male support, and 48% of Latino male support in 2024. In 2020, he got 58% white male support, 12% black male support, and 38% Latino male support.
