Raskin ‘not ruling out’ challenge to Nadler for House Judiciary Democratic leader

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) said he’s “not ruling anything out” when it comes to a shake-up of Democratic leadership on the House Judiciary Committee.

Raskin responded to rumblings that House Democrats may try to make moves to replace Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY) as ranking member on CNN’s State of the Union when asked if he believed Nadler was the best fit to lead the minority.

“Jerry Nadler is a great leader and a great friend of mine. Obviously, we are going through discussions within our caucus about who’s going to be in different positions at this point, but I have great respect and admiration for Jerry Nadler, I really do,” Raskin said.

When asked if he would rule out asking Nadler to step aside or perhaps launch his own bid, Raskin said, “I’m not ruling anything out at this point.”

“We’re engaged in conversations all with the purpose of creating a strategic focus and capacity within the Democratic members of the House so that we’re going to be a really effective and muscular opposition,” the Maryland Democrat continued.

FIVE DEMOCRATS IN PRIME POSITION TO BE FACE OF THE PARTY IN 2028

Many House Democrats expect that the Judiciary Committee will be highly active once Trump takes office. The committee is led by Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), a staunch Trump ally.

According to the New York Times, former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has been among those privately encouraging Rasking to challenge Nadler. Raskin and Nadler are close friends, which could complicate any leadership challenge.

Raskin, who currently serves on the committee, has risen in his party over his work as lead impeachment manager against now President-elect Donald Trump in 2021 and as the top Democrat on the House committee that investigated the deadly Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. Some Democrats prefer Raskin’s debate-like tendencies when he communicates over Nadler’s communicative style, which typically relies on talking points.

Nadler, however, has made it clear he has no plans to step aside, writing a letter to his colleagues recently announcing his plans to retain the post.

“As a New Yorker, I have stood up to Donald Trump my entire career,” Nadler wrote.“When he became president, I led the Judiciary Committee’s efforts to hold him accountable for his various abuses of power, culminating in two historic impeachments.”
