Brian Mast commits to ‘America first’ diplomacy that won’t be ‘played for a sucker’
Rep. Brian Mast (R-FL) responded to concerns about his capacity for diplomacy as the soon-to-be chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
Mast appeared on Fox News’s America’s Newsroom on Tuesday to respond to reports that he is not prone to bipartisanship. The Florida congressman said his commitment to cut unnecessary foreign aid could become a bipartisan matter. He cited instances where a drag show in Ecuador and an atheist proselytizing mission were funded by U.S. taxpayer dollars.
“If they don’t want to be bipartisan to cut those things — because they were putting it forward — then it’s not going to be bipartisan. So be it. We’re not gonna have any American taxpayer have to wonder why they gave their money to the government, and it went to do things like that,” Mast said. “I think the conversation is always this: Number one, how does the diplomacy we’re doing put America first?”
These comments also come as the United States has spent inordinate amounts of money and weapons in Ukraine and Israel toward their respective wars. In October, President Joe Biden assured Ukraine another $425 million in aid, bringing the total given by the U.S. to $59 billion. Biden also showed support for the Israel Security Supplemental Appropriations Act, which allotted $26.38 billion to the Middle Eastern ally.
“You get to that point by asking, what does America need from the country or region? Do we get what we’re needing from that country or region? If we’re not, we’re being played for suckers, and President Trump doesn’t want America to be played for a sucker, nor do I,” Mast said.
Mast is a veteran who is now a dozen years removed from having lost both of his legs while serving in Afghanistan. He also served for the Israel Defense Forces and has donned his IDF uniform while in legislative session.
