Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) recommended that President-elect Donald Trump help unite the “free-range chickens” of the Republican Party under the government spending bill.
With a government shutdown looming, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) released his continuing resolution to fund the government this week to a mixed reaction from his party. Kennedy said the over-1,500-page legislation “was as big as a Costco” and resulted in a “multiple vehicle pileup” among Republicans.

“Speaker Johnson had to add a lot of spending porn to get the Democrats on board. This can be fixed,” Kennedy said on Fox and Friends on Thursday. “First, I would tell everybody to take their meds. No. 2, I think President Trump is going to have to consider coming to Washington.”
Even though Trump is a month away from his inauguration, Kennedy referred to Trump as “the president now.” Even before Trump won the November election, he wielded great influence over both chambers as he was able to convince Republican lawmakers to kill the border deal earlier this year.
“Speaker Johnson’s problem is that on the Republican side, he’s got a bunch of free-range chickens. I’m not criticizing them, but they wander off, and Mike can’t catch all of them by himself,” Kennedy said.
This continuing resolution was to fund the government through March. While the House was set to vote on it Wednesday night, that vote was canceled.
The government shutdown deadline is midnight on Saturday, Dec. 21.
