Social Security update: January direct payment worth $943 goes out in 8 days

The Supplemental Security Income check for January 2025 will be sent out to eligible recipients in eight days, with the payments worth up to $943 for individual filers.

The Social Security Administration will issue SSI payments to eligible citizens on Dec. 31, in accordance with requirements that the benefits be given to recipients by the first day of the month.

The mandate for recipients to get their checks by the first of the month means that when the first day of a month falls on a weekend or a holiday, the Social Security Administration issues SSI checks the business day before. With Jan. 1, 2025, being a federal holiday, the payments will be issued on Dec. 31.

In 2025, there will be five instances after January’s payment of recipients getting their payments earlier due to this rule. The payments for February, March, June, September, and November, will be issued earlier than the first day of those respective months to ensure recipients have their SSI payments by their beginnings.

The program gives payments to people living with debilitating disabilities that may affect their income.

The amount SSI checks are worth depends on the status of the filer, with individuals getting monthly $914 payments and eligible couples receiving $1,415 payments per month. Essential persons, people who live with someone receiving SSI and provide them with necessary care, get monthly payments of $472 from the program.

The first SSI payments were sent out to recipients by the Social Security Administration in 1974, with payment rates being adjusted in line with the cost of living since 1975, according to the SSA. Supplemental Security Income checks are different from other payments sent out by the Social Security Administration.

Regular Social Security payments, primarily for retirees, are issued on a different schedule each month from SSI payments and are dependent on the recipient’s date of birth. Those checks are sent in three waves each month.
