Lara Trump said she “upset” President-elect Donald Trump when she turned down the opportunity to take Florida‘s soon-to-be-open Senate seat.
Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) is slated to join the president-elect’s administration as secretary of state in January, leaving his seat in the Senate open. Donald Trump’s daughter-in-law resigned from her position as co-chairwoman of the Republican National Committee, prompting speculation that she was preparing to take over for Rubio. However, she clarified that she wasn’t interested.
“[Trump] was a little upset whenever I said that, you know, ‘I’m not gonna do it right now,’” she told the Daily Mail. “The only person that Donald Trump wanted to see there was probably me.”
Sean Hannity interviewed Lara Trump last month and asked if she had spoken to Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), who will ultimately appoint Rubio’s replacement in January before the next election in 2026.
“I’m honored. I’ve heard the same rumors you have, Sean — imagine that. It’s an honor to be even mentioned on this list of people who are incredible patriots and have done an incredible service for this country,” she said. “But, of course, it’s an honor to be considered.”
Meanwhile, the president-elect reportedly spoke to DeSantis himself to vouch for his daughter-in-law. Elon Musk also endorsed the former RNC co-chairwoman for the Senate before she pulled her name out of the running.
Ever since Lara Trump took the role at the RNC, she expressed that her goal was to just work for a single election cycle. She and Michael Whatley replaced former RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel early last year.
Trump implied that people will only see “more” of her rather than less. After the inauguration on Jan. 20, she plans to make an announcement about what’s next in her career.
