Morning Joe host issues swift correction after calling Trump ‘rapist’

MSNBC’s Morning Joe quickly issued a correction on a guest after he referred to President-elect Donald Trump as “a rapist,” stressing that the incoming president was “found libel of sexual abuse.”

On Wednesday, Morning Joe had Scott Galloway as a guest to discuss Trump’s victory in the 2024 election, during which he claimed the reason voters elected “an insurrectionist and a rapist” was due to how people in their 30s are not doing as well financially as their parents.

“Great conversation,” Morning Joe co-host Mika Brzezinski stated before a commercial break. “I want to make a comment, though, just about a word that was used in this interview: Donald Trump was tried civilly and was found liable of sexual abuse, not rape. But the judge in the case likened his actions to rape, but the liability was officially called sexual abuse.”

As of Wednesday afternoon, Galloway has not addressed his Morning Joe comment on either X or BlueSky, an alternative platform to X.

The correction comes in the aftermath of ABC News and George Stephanopoulos, one of its top anchors, agreeing to settle a defamation suit for $15 million after Stephanopoulos said Trump was found “liable for rape” air when referring to Trump’s battle against E. Jean Carroll. In May 2023, a jury found Trump “liable for sexual assault” but said the prosecution failed to prove he raped her.

In December, the network issued a statement that stated both it and Stephanopoulos “regret” comments made against Trump.

The ABC News anchor deleted his X account shortly after the network’s statement was issued.

Following ABC News agreeing to pay $15 million, MSNBC host Symone Sanders-Townsend came to the defense of Stephanopoulos, calling the settlement “insane” and that the ABC News anchor’s comment “seems to hold up.” Trump has yet to comment on Sanders-Townsend’s comment.
