DNC chair race tightens with two favorites consolidating support – Washington Examiner

The democratic National Committee (DNC) chair race has become competitive, centering on two main candidates: Ken Martin, chairman of the Minnesota democratic-Farmer-Labor Party, and Ben Wikler, chairman of the Wisconsin Democratic Party. Unlike past contests marked by ideological ‍divides,⁢ this race is primarily about party mechanics, which some critics perceive as⁢ uninspiring. Martin, known for empowering state parties and leaning toward a populist approach, focuses on labor issues. In contrast, wikler enjoys strong support from the Democratic establishment. Former interim DNC Chairwoman Donna Brazile noted the lack of new ideas in ⁤the⁣ campaign, suggesting that prominent party figures have not rallied behind any specific‍ candidate. The election will take place on February 1.

The race for the Democratic National Committee chair has tightened around two candidates.

Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party Chairman Ken Martin, 51, and Wisconsin Democratic Party Chairman Ben Wikler, 43, have emerged as favorites. The race is notable for a lack of a grand ideological struggle characteristic of previous races, with the main contention being the inner workings of party mechanics. Critics within the party complain that the race is uninspired, the New York Times reported.

“Had Kamala or Biden made a call and said, ‘Look, we want to rally around X, Y, and Z,’ I may have taken an interest in someone,” former interim DNC Chairwoman Donna Brazile told the outlet. “Other than giving state parties more resources, which is as old as the Republic itself, I haven’t heard anything new.”

The vote will be held on Feb. 1.

Wikler is the favored candidate of much of the Democratic establishment, something Martin and his supporters have pounced on. Martin made a name for himself by empowering state parties, earning the ire of the national DNC leadership. He has pitched himself as more of a populist candidate, appealing to the labor vote.

“We need to have party members talk to workers instead of celebrities,” he said at a virtual forum hosted by the DNC’s labor council on Wednesday.

“I’ve always said, ‘If the DFL isn’t supporting working people, then working people should not support the DFL,’” Martin added.

Wikler, meanwhile, has distinguished himself as one of the most effective fundraisers among Democrats. That could backfire, as Martin’s backers argue that he’s too close to the party’s big donors.

Wikler’s fundraising ability has won him the support of the DNC establishment, with the first major intervention in the race being Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s (D-NY) endorsement of him last week.

“As one of the best state party chairs in the country, Ben possesses all the qualities Democrats across the country are looking for in our next DNC Chair,” Schumer said. “He’s a tenacious organizer—one of the best organizers in the country—a proven fundraiser, a sharp communicator, and able to reach out to all segments of the Democratic Party. Most importantly, he knows how to win.”

According to campaign adviser Justin Buoen, Martin has endorsements from “well over 100” of the 448 DNC members. Wikler hasn’t disclosed his count.

Though Martin and Wikler are clear frontrunners, others still in the race boast some support: Former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley reportedly claims the backing of “more than 60” DNC members, and New York State Sen. James Skoufis claims 23.

Outgoing Democratic National Committee Chairman Jaime Harrison announced he would not seek reelection moments after the Democratic losses in the November 2024 election. He has held the position since 2021.
