Hillbilly Elegy star Glenn Close takes swipes at Vance

Glenn Close, Oscar-nominee for her role in the Hillbilly Elegy film based on Vice President-elect J.D. Vance‘s memoir, says she no longer recognizes the politician after playing his grandmother.

During an appearance on The View on Wednesday, she was asked by co-host Joy Behar about her portrayal of the incoming vice president’s grandmother.

“Speaking of vice presidents — in 2020, you played J.D. Vance’s mamaw, his grandmother, in Hillbilly Elegy, and the movie was based on his bestselling memoir. I remember him hawking it in the old days,” Behar said to Close, adding, “He even visited the set at the time.”

Close responded, “He did, and he helped young Owen [Asztalos], who was playing him [at a younger age]. He helped him. We all met members of the family. We all sat with them individually, one-on-one.”

The actress said she observed how Vance’s grandmother “walked and talked” in her effort to portray her character accurately in the movie.

“For me, with Mamaw, I’d say, ‘How did she walk into a room? How did she sit? How did she smoke? How did she laugh? How did she change the chemistry?’ The family was very generous,” Close said.

Behar jumped in to suggest Vance was a different person then than his current “personality.”

“He had a whole different personality in those days than he has now,” Behar asserted.

“I don’t know what happened,” Close replied as the audience laughed.

“A lot of people out there are like that. The Invasion of the Body Snatchers I think is the name of that movie,” Behar added.

“Yeah, yeah, power is probably the biggest aphrodisiac for a human being,” Close continued, affirming Behar’s suggestion that Vance was different than his humble beginnings in his autobiography.

The actress also added that she thought Vance’s grandmother was “fantastic” and admitted that she was actually “toning her down” in her portrayal during the movie.

In August, Close took digs at the vice president-elect for his controversial quote about “childless cat ladies.”

“Eve would have left a bleeding mouse head in the bed of anyone who criticized any kind of lady with a CAT!” Close wrote in an Instagram post with a picture of her cat during the presidential campaign.
