Hawley and Schmitt assure GOP is unified in reclaiming nation’s ‘greatness’
In recent discussions, Senators Josh Hawley and eric Schmitt from Missouri emphasized the unity of the Republican party as they prepare for legislative negotiations regarding budget reconciliation ahead of President-elect Donald Trump’s return to the White House. Both senators expressed excitement about Trump’s upcoming inauguration and his potential impact on the country. Hawley specifically highlighted a recent meeting between Trump and several Republicans, which he described as positive and energizing. During an appearance on Fox News, he conveyed a sense of renewed optimism, stating that America was ready to “reclaim its greatness” and outlining trump’s plans for action, such as revitalizing energy production and addressing immigration. This sentiment reflects a broader belief within the party that Trump’s leadership will restore American pride and ambition.
Hawley and Schmitt assure GOP is unified in reclaiming nation’s ‘greatness’
Sens. Josh Hawley (R-MO) and Eric Schmitt (R-MO) both assured the Republican Party is united amid legislative budget reconciliation discussions concerning a one- or two-bill strategy in the days leading up to President-elect Donald Trump’s return to the White House, which comes after “a triumphant return” by the incoming president.
Trump met with multiple Republicans during a visit to Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, which Hawley described as “a great meeting” ahead of Trump’s inauguration on Jan. 20. Hawley, in assessing the excitement to have Trump back in the office, stated that the president-elect has “energized” the country for his agenda.
“There’s this sense that America is back on the move, that we’re done apologizing for our past,” Hawley explained on Fox News’s Hannity. “He talked about the Panama Canal; why did we ever give away the canal? Why’d we apologize for being a strong, great country? You know, with Trump, we are going to start standing up, reclaiming our history, reclaiming American greatness. He talked about getting the Panama Canal back, getting the country on the move again, opening up our energy production, closing our borders, doing all that in the first day, and the first hundred days for sure. It’s inspiring, Sean. I think people feel that energy and that momentum.”
Schmitt, meanwhile, previewed how the House of Representatives and the Senate, both under Republican control, are working to get “some early wins on the board” for Trump and suggested two reconciliation packages to ensure the incoming president can fulfill his deportation plans on day one. He also predicted “a flurry of executive orders” from Trump once he is inaugurated on Jan. 20.
When Hawley was asked if Congress can help Trump achieve his agenda, the senator assured that this would “absolutely” get accomplished and that Republicans in Congress will recognize that voters support Trump’s vision for the nation, which includes closing the southern border, resuming energy production, and providing tax relief.
Schmitt echoed Hawley’s comments on unity among congressional Republicans, citing how the last four years were “a disaster” and lawmakers are now ready to seize the moment to deliver on the mandate demanded from voters.
Sen. Tim Sheehy (R-MT), who was elected to office last November, provided details on what Trump’s meeting with the Senate detailed, with one of the first topics discussed being the wildfires in Southern California. The Montana senator stated that Trump is committed to prioritizing the nation’s communities over “wrong-headed environmental plans” to ensure the public’s safety from wildfires.
On Tuesday, Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders (R-AR) expressed excitement for the return of Trump later this month, specifically for how the president-elect would make the United States “energy dominant.” The governor attributed the incoming president’s victory last year to voters feeling the price of gasoline, as well as people wanting to return to Trump’s “winning and prosperity.”
