Vance resigning from Senate effective at midnight

Vice President-elect J.D. Vance has announced he is resigning from his Senate seat at midnight on Friday, leaving him roughly six more hours in the upper chamber.

Vance penned a letter to Gov. Mike DeWine (R-OH) announcing his move, adding that it has been a “tremendous honor and privilege to serve the people of Ohio in the Senate over the past two years.”

Republicans hold a 53-47 majority in the upper chamber. Ohio Lt. Gov. Jon Husted (R-OH) is expected to be appointed by DeWine as the next senator from Ohio.

In November, voters elected Vance and President-elect Donald Trump over Vice President Kamala Harris and Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) by a 312 to 226 electoral vote margin. The Trump-Vance ticket won the popular vote 77.3 million votes to Harris’s 75 million votes.

Trump chose Vance as his running mate in July as the Republican National Convention was set to start. Trump will be inaugurated as the 47th president on Jan. 20.

Vance will become one of the youngest vice presidents ever at 40 years old and Usha Vance will be the first Indian American and Hindu second lady.

“THANK YOU!” Vance said the day after the election. “To my beautiful wife for making it possible to do this. To President Donald J. Trump, for giving me such an opportunity to serve our country at this level. And to the American people, for their trust. I will never stop fighting for ALL of you.”
