Illegal immigrant deported at least five times tried to kidnap Alabama teenager: Officials
An illegal immigrant in Alabama being held on attempted kidnapping charges had been deported at least five times before his latest arrest, officials said.
Yordy Centeno-Melchor, 31, was taken into custody after attempting to abduct a teenage girl from the parking lot of a Holtville, Alabama, business on New Year’s Eve, according to a report.
“It seems as if, when he got in the parking lot, he sort of coaxed the girl, who was trying to move a buggy,” Elmore County Sheriff Bill Franklin said. “And she was in that area or near his vehicle. But he coaxed her into coming over to the vehicle. She’s a young girl. She’s 17 years old.”
The illegal immigrant fled when he was confronted by a man who saw the girl in “distress,” and he was arrested days later, 30 miles north of Elmore, following a motor vehicle stop.
A search warrant of Melchor’s phone revealed he had planned “what he was going to do,” according to Franklin.
“He was going to give her $200, and I won’t get into the intricacies of that, but he was obviously trying to coax her to get in the car,” the sheriff said.
Melchor is reported to have been deported from the country at least five times before this latest incident, District Attorney CJ Robinson said.
“The federal government has failed to keep us safe,” Robinson said. “So, we will do their job to protect the people of the 19th Judicial Circuit.”
“Right now the investigation shows no connection between Melchor and the victim,” he added. “We are investigating his whereabouts before the attempted kidnapping to see if there are any more potential victims. Depending on what we find, there may be more charges pending.”
Melchor is a Mexican national and is currently being held on a $100,000 bond for attempted kidnapping in the second degree, according to the Elmore County Sheriff’s Office.
