Sen. Roger Marshall (R-KS) previewed the discussions on how President-elect Donald Trump will improve the nation’s health status, including what the “Make America Healthy Again” initiative will look like.
Marshall, who is a doctor himself, said he is “excited” to help Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Trump’s nominee for Health and Human Services secretary, and Dr. Mehmet Oz, the nominee for Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services administrator, tackle the modern health challenges the country faces, which he argued starts with providing “healthy, quality nutrition.” Other steps necessary to kick-start this initiative, Marshall explained, include fighting chronic diseases as well as the mental health crisis.
“So I think we’re talking about, well, how do we do that? How do we make sure that all Americans have affordable access to healthy food?” Marshall said on Fox News’s Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo. “How do we have more affordable access to mental health? What’s causing the mental health challenges? And then when it comes to treating chronic diseases, how do we treat that the best as well, and we’re trying to put some meat on the bones, so to speak, of how we accomplish that.”
Marshall continued by saying that the uptick in chronic diseases in the nation could be a combination of both the diets that people have as well as the toxins people are exposed to. In addition to providing proper diets for the public, Marshall said healthy food must also be affordable and “available” for people, while ultra-processed foods would face road bumps in the incoming Trump administration.
The Kansas senator was also asked if he thinks all of Trump’s Cabinet nominees have enough votes to get confirmed, to which he said “the votes are there” even for the nominees who are “outside the box.”
The Senate will hold confirmation hearings on Tuesday for Pete Hegseth, the nominee for defense secretary, Doug Collins, the nominee for veterans affairs secretary, and former North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, the nominee for secretary of the interior. This confirmation process will then be followed up with another on Wednesday when the Senate will vote to confirm Gov. Kristi Noem (R-SD), the nominee for homeland security secretary, and Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), the nominee for secretary of state.
Former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard’s confirmation hearing for director of national intelligence does not have a specific date yet. However, Sen. James Lankford (R-OK) confirmed on Sunday that he intends to support her once the confirmation vote is held.
