Virginia Dems Want Unpopular Abortion Until Birth On The Ballot

virginia Democrats have initiated a push to amend the state constitution to ⁢permit abortion untill birth,‍ responding to ⁣similar movements in other states. Despite narrowly holding control of the House of Delegates, they approved ⁢the amendment with‍ a party-line vote ⁣of 51 to 48. This move follows the recent rejection⁤ of ⁢protections for infants born alive after failed abortions, indicating the party’s⁣ commitment to advancing an extensive abortion ⁣agenda.

The proposed amendment asserts a broad⁣ “right to reproductive freedom” ‍without clear definitions, raising concerns that⁣ it could dismantle existing state regulations⁢ on late-term abortions. Advocates‍ claim it will not hinder certain restrictions, but critics argue ‍it undermines safeguards for both women and children. Additionally, the amendment could⁢ allow minors to make abortion decisions without parental consent, further complicating medical decision-making in Virginia.

The⁤ amendment will require ⁤passage in the ‌Senate and reapproval after‍ the next election for it‍ to reach a public vote, but its advancement signals a‍ notable shift in ⁣the state’s legislative landscape regarding abortion rights.

Emboldened by the wave of deceptive abortion-until-birth ballot measures battles in other red states, Virginia Democrats kicked off the Commonwealth’s House of Delegates 2025 session by voting to advance an amendment that would enshrine abortion until birth in the state’s constitution.

The blue party barely kept control of the state House in the 2024 election. That narrow majority, however, hasn’t stopped them from trying to jam their extremist abortion agenda through the legislature shortly after it convened.

In a 51 to 48 party-line vote, the same Democrats who recently killed protections for babies born alive of botched abortions voted to greenlight an unlimited abortion amendment they hope will make the state ballot in coming years.

The proposed constitutional modification still has to pass the Senate and then be re-approved by both bodies of the General Assembly after the next November election to get a vote from Virginians. Tuesday’s action on the amendment, however, signifies the Democrats’ willingness to sacrifice voters’ feelings about abortion in favor of the abortion radicalism that has plagued the state for years.

Virginia’s abortion restrictions are already some of the loosest in the U.S. The state’s prohibition on ending life in the womb beyond 27 weeks gestation unless authorized by three physicians does not square away with a majority of Americans who oppose butchering babies beyond 15 weeks of pregnancy.

The amendment approved on Tuesday goes even further than current statutes by asserting a “right to reproductive freedom” and pregnancy decision-making that “shall not be denied, burdened, or infringed upon, unless justified by a compelling state interest and achieved by the least restrictive means.”

Advocates of the amendment claim that it will not stop Virginia from enacting certain parameters on late-term abortions. The amendment text, however, includes vague language and undefined terms that can easily be construed to strip the state of its safeguards for women and babies.

Parents, who Virginia law mandates must sign off before a minor can obtain an abortion, are also threatened by the amendment’s sweeping protection for an “individual’s right to reproductive freedom.”

In fact, the amendment specifically bars Virginia from attempting to “penalize, prosecute, or otherwise take adverse action” against anyone who executes or obtains an abortion at any pointing pregnancy, “except when justified by a compelling state interest.”

“Virginia already allows abortion in the sixth month of pregnancy, but that isn’t enough for Democrats. Their eagerness to break legislative protocol to make third-trimester abortions one of the first votes of 2025 shows just how extreme the Democrat party has become. Their actions are a reminder of the high stakes of Virginia’s legislative races this year. GOP candidates must expose their opponents’ radical agenda for all-trimester abortion, the elimination of parental rights and forced taxpayer funding of abortion,” SBA Pro-Life America Regional Political Director Caitlin Connors said in a statement.
