Greenwood’s 1984 hit has been Trump’s entrance song at rallies and will be sung at the “Make America Great Again Victory Rally” at Washington, D.C.’s Capital One Arena on Sunday and the inauguration ceremony on Monday.

“This particular time, we have elected to be live with the United States Marine Corps band, and that’s going to have a particularly majestic presentation of my song, which it thrills me to be able to sing it live with real musicians live onstage,” Greenwood told the Washington Examiner. “So it’ll be a wonderful appearance.”

Greenwood reflected on when he originally wrote “God Bless the USA” and how it became “an important indoctrination” for his career as a country artist. While he stated the song has meant “a lot” to other presidents besides Trump, the president-elect is the person who has honored him and his song more than any other in his life, and he is proud of what it means to Trump and the United States.

When asked about his thoughts and reaction to Trump defeating Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 election, Greenwood cited the popular vote regarding how voters “love” Trump, whereas he said the Democratic Party had “two very weak candidates” in Harris and President Joe Biden. Greenwood pointed to “a change in America’s attitude” in the months to come.

“And that is, we are going to be, and I don’t want to just say the word ‘MAGA,’ we are going to make America great again. We’re going to make this country strong, and I’m proud to be a part of it,” Greenwood said. “My song ‘God Bless the USA’ has been around for 40 years, and it has represented much more than politics for the country. And as a country artist living in Tennessee and traveling the United States, I have had many opportunities to uplift this country in times of crisis and times of happiness.” 

Besides the inauguration and the many celebrations surrounding it, Greenwood is set to make numerous tour stops in 2025, including the Rock the Country tour. The tour, headlined by Kid Rock and Nickelback, will feature Greenwood in Little Rock, Arkansas, on June 21.

Greenwood is not the only musician who will perform at Trump’s inauguration, as country artist Carrie Underwood is also set to perform at the event. Meanwhile, the Village People, famous for “Y.M.C.A.,” are performing at Turning Point USA’s Inaugural-Eve Ball set for Sunday night.
