Bill Gates ‘impressed’ by Trump during three-hour dinner

Multibillionaire and ex-Microsoft CEO Bill Gates joined President-elect Donald Trump for dinner, where they engaged in a wide-ranging discussion of topics including public health, finding a cure for HIV, and how to combat polio in developing countries.

“I had a chance, about two weeks ago, to go have a long and actually quite intriguing dinner with him,” Gates said during an interview with Wall Street Journal Editor-in-Chief Emma Tucker.

He shared that he was “impressed” by Trump’s enthusiasm and interest in matters of public health during the three-hour dinner.

“He, in the Covid days, accelerated the vaccine innovation,” Gates said. “So I was asking him if maybe the same kind of thing could be done here, and we both got, I think, pretty excited about that.”

Gates now joins a growing list of entrepreneurs and billionaires who’ve taken a strong interest in getting closer to Trump. So far, Trump has met Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk, who is slated to head his newly minted Department of Government Efficiency.

During the election, Gates supported Vice President Kamala Harris, donating $50 million to her campaign. However, he never publicly endorsed her, and people close to the matter said he signaled he would work with whichever candidate won.

“I support candidates who demonstrate a clear commitment to improving health care, reducing poverty and fighting climate change in the U.S. and around the world,” he told the New York Times in October. “I have a long history of working with leaders across the political spectrum, but this election is different, with unprecedented significance for Americans and the most vulnerable people around the world.”

Trump and Gates were joined for dinner by Trump’s incoming White House chief of staff, Susie Wiles.
