Sen. Wicker calls for Hegseth to be confirmed as Secretary of Defense
Pete Hegseth, President Donald Trump’s nominee for secretary of defense, faces a potential roadblock to becoming the head of the Pentagon with a claim of inappropriate behavior made by his former sister-in-law.
Danielle Hegseth, who used to be married to Hegseth’s brother, alleged in an affidavit distributed to the Senate Armed Services Committee that the former Fox News host was abusive to his second wife, which caused her to allegedly fear for her safety. Hegseth denied these claims and said they were merely more smear tactics designed to derail his confirmation.
“Mr. Hegseth categorically denies every word of every allegation,” the Washington Examiner previously reported.
Sen. Roger Wicker (R-MS), SAS Committee chairman, announced late Wednesday night that Hegseth still had the backing of Senate Republicans.
“Recent reports regarding a confidential briefing on the FBI background investigation of Pete Hegseth that I received last week are starkly and factually inaccurate,” Wicker said in a statement posted on the X account for Republicans on the Senate Armed Services Committee. “It is disturbing that a sensitive, long-standing process used by committee leadership to vet presidential personnel is being litigated in the press by anonymous sources with ulterior motives.”
Wicker said he had received multiple background assessments on Hegseth conducted by the FBI. The senator from Mississippi then stated that he believed Hegseth was qualified and ready to be the country’s next defense secretary.
“I have received three separate, detailed briefings, on the FBI’s background investigation of Mr. Hegseth,” Wicker said. “After this thorough review, I am ironclad in my assessment that the nominee, Mr. Hegseth, is prepared to be the next Secretary of Defense, and that the allegations unfairly impugning his character do not pass scrutiny.”
Wicker then stated that Hegseth should be confirmed, mentioning that he had the president’s and Republicans’ support in the Senate. He called for him to be confirmed as “quickly as possible.”
“Mr. Hegseth has the confidence of the President,” Wicker said. “He has the backing of Senate Republicans. During this precarious national security moment, the Senate needs to confirm this nominee as fast as possible.”
