Jim Acosta ‘going independent’ on Substack after CNN exit
Ex-CNN anchor Jim Acosta promoted his new Substack account following his exit from CNN, describing the move as a “new venture” for him.
Acosta announced his departure from CNN during the final episode of his show, CNN Newsroom with Jim Acosta, on Tuesday. Acosta had launched his Substack account on Jan. 16 with a post simply reading “coming soon.”
“But as you can see, this was my last day at CNN, and I did want to jump on Substack Live here for a moment and say welcome to my new venture,” Acosta said Tuesday in a video posted to X following his last CNN show. “I’m going independent, at least for now. This is just the beginning, but I wanted to invite you to join me here on this platform as we talk about the day’s news, talk about politics, and so on.”

Acosta also reiterated his CNN farewell statement, telling viewers, “Don’t give into the lies.” He concluded the video post by stating he would talk to his viewers “soon.”
As of Wednesday afternoon, the replies to Acosta’s video on X have been limited.
Prior to Acosta announcing his departure from CNN, President Donald Trump issued a statement celebrating Acosta’s expected announcement, deeming the anchor “a major sleazebag” who would fail “no matter where he ends up.” Trump and Acosta sparred during the president’s first term in office, with one of the most iconic encounters occurring in 2018 when the two feuded on illegal immigration and Trump used his iconic “fake news” saying during their exchange.
This week, the White House announced that it will open the press room to “independent journalists, podcasters, social media influencers and content creators,” possibly paving the way for Acosta to return to Trump’s White House briefing room.
