60 Minutes releases Kamala Harris transcript given to FCC: ‘Not doctored’
CBS News’s 60 Minutes program released a full transcript of its Oct. 7 interview with then-presidential candidate Kamala Harris amid a federal investigation into whether the interview was manipulated in Harris’s favor.
“We are posting the same transcripts and videos of our interview with Vice President Kamala Harris that we provided to the FCC,” CBS News wrote on its website, referencing the Federal Communications Commission. “They show — consistent with 60 Minutes’ repeated assurances to the public — that the 60 Minutes broadcast was not doctored or deceitful.”
The interview aired a few weeks before Harris lost the 2024 election to President Donald Trump. 60 Minutes and CBS were accused of editing Harris’s response to a question about whether Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was listening to the Biden-Harris administration.
Donald Trump sued CBS for $10 billion, saying the network engaged in “partisan and unlawful acts of election and voter interference through malicious, deceptive, and substantial news distortion.” Trump and others’ criticism was due to two different parts of the interview being shared by CBS, presenting the perception that Harris’s answer was altered to put her in a better light.
CBS maintained that it made edits for the reasons it always does, “for time, space, or clarity.”
“We broadcast a longer portion of the vice president’s answer on Face the Nation and broadcast a shorter excerpt from the same answer on 60 Minutes the next day,” CBS said in a statement. “Each excerpt reflects the substance of the vice president’s answer. As the full transcript shows, we edited the interview to ensure that as much of the vice president’s answers to 60 Minutes‘ many questions were included in our original broadcast while fairly representing those answers.”
60 Minutes also provided the transcript to the Federal Communications Commission, which is investigating the situation. FCC Chairman Brendan Carr said, “CBS did not ask for confidential or non-public treatment of these materials.”
