Andy Harris worries GOP is ‘weeks behind’ on spending bill

Rep. andy Harris (R-MD) has expressed ⁤disappointment with the current House budget ⁢proposal, ‌citing concerns that the Republican party is “weeks behind” schedule on the spending bill. His‍ remarks come⁢ amid fears⁤ that Democratic lawmakers may refuse to support funding efforts, potentially leading to a government shutdown. Harris is‌ aligned with Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) regarding funding timelines but disagrees with the approach of ‍consolidating the budget into one complete bill,⁢ suggesting that this could face⁢ obstacles‌ in Congress. He emphasized the necessity to act quickly, especially to ensure funding for border security, ‍highlighting that failure to advance the bill this week would further delay progress. While ‍Johnson initially indicated that the House GOP was united on the budget, he later revised the timeline for a‌ reconciliation bill to March ⁢14, reflecting ongoing complexities within the budget negotiations.

Rep. Andy Harris (R-MD) said he was “disappointed” with the House budget proposal.

This came amid rumblings that Democratic lawmakers are going to hold out on voting in Republican’s favor to fund the government and prompt a government shutdown. Harris is aligned with House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) in his timeline to fund the government, but he disagreed that it should all be outlined in one big bill.

“I think we can do it, but if we go with one big bill, what we’re doing is seeing roadblocks in the House, that is the problem,” Harris said on Fox Business’s Mornings with Maria Bartiromo. “I was a little disappointed in the House Budget Committee. If we don’t move on a bill this week, we are weeks behind schedule, and the president needs money for that border security.”

While Johnson said the House GOP was “united” on issuing a budget reconciliation bill as soon as late February, on Sunday, he changed his estimate to March 14, the deadline stemming from the last continuing resolution.

Johnson’s last continuing resolution was supported by all Democratic lawmakers. Still, 34 House Republicans and 11 senators voted against the legislation.

Harris placed Rep. Bob Good (R-VA) as chairman of the House Freedom Caucus committee this session.
