Philadelphia Eagles star player says it will be ‘team decision’ if they visit White House
The Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 in Super Bowl LIX on Sunday. Traditionally, the winner of the game is invited to the White House and honored in a special ceremony hosted by the president. This tradition goes back decades but has garnered some controversy in recent years, including an incident involving the Philadelphia Eagles.
After defeating the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII by a score of 40-33 in February 2018, the Eagles were initially invited to visit the White House by then-President Donald Trump. The president then rescinded the invite after it was revealed that most of the team’s players planned to skip the ceremony.
With their victory on Sunday, their second in seven years, the Eagles are the first professional sports team to win a championship during Trump’s second term and are faced with the likelihood of being invited to the White House to be honored by President Trump. Will the Eagles visit this time around?
Star offensive tackle Lane Johnson said it would be a team decision whether the Eagles will visit the White House if invited.
“I’d be honored to go, regardless of who the president is, but we’ll see,” Johnson said in response to a question asked by Sportico’s Eric Jackson. “It’s ultimately a team decision. I’ll do what’s best for the team.”
However, the political climate is quite different in Feb. 2025 compared to 2018. This is not to suggest that the Eagles are more likely to visit, but Trump seems more popular in the NFL during his second term than during his first term. Multiple players have expressed admiration for the president, and several players did the so-called Trump dance during the season in November after making big plays during their games, a significant cultural shift from Trump’s previous term.
Furthermore, Trump became the first sitting president to attend a Super Bowl when he arrived at the Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana, on Sunday for the NFL’s championship game. So far, he has not invited the Eagles to the White House, something that is not unusual for any president the day after the game. Trump has also yet to publicly congratulate the Eagles on their Super Bowl win.
