Buddy Carter proposes renaming Greenland: ‘Red, White, and Blueland’
Rep.Buddy Carter (R-GA) has proposed legislation to rename Greenland to “Red, White, and Blueland” if the territory is acquired by the United States, a topic that has caught the attention of President Donald Trump. Trump has expressed a serious interest in purchasing Greenland due to its strategic location in the Arctic and its natural resources. Carter’s proposal emphasizes national security and includes support from other House Republicans pushing for similar initiatives. Even tho the Danish government has expressed disinterest in selling Greenland, Carter believes that the acquisition will strengthen the U.S.significantly. Additionally, there have been recent trends of name changes under the Trump governance, as seen with other geographical names and military installations. The proposed legislation would need to pass various congressional hurdles before reaching the president’s desk.
Buddy Carter proposes renaming Greenland: ‘Red, White, and Blueland’
As President Donald Trump continues to make his interest in acquiring Greenland known, Rep. Buddy Carter (R-GA) is proposing a new name for the Danish territory if it is acquired by the United States.
Trump and his Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, have repeatedly said the president is serious about acquiring Greenland due to its key access to the Arctic Circle and natural resources. Several House Republicans have offered bills to facilitate many of Trump’s plans, including eliminating DEI. Carter’s bill would authorize the president to acquire Greenland and rename it “Red, White, and Blueland.”
“America is back and will soon be bigger than ever with the addition of Red, White, and Blueland. President Trump has correctly identified the purchase of what is now Greenland as a national security priority, and we will proudly welcome its people to join the freest nation to ever exist when our Negotiator-in-Chief inks this monumental deal,” Carter said in a statement.
The legislation would need to pass through the House of Representatives and surpass the filibuster in the Senate to make it to Trump’s desk for approval. Danish officials have said they do not want to give up Greenland, even as Trump and his administration have continued to push them to the negotiating table.
Name changes have been an early trend under the second Trump term, with the president reverting the name of the mountain in Alaska known as “Denali” back to “Mount McKinley.” He also changed the “Gulf of Mexico” to the “Gulf of America.”
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced Monday he would revert the name of “Fort Liberty” back to “Fort Bragg,” somewhat reversing a Biden administration change. Hegseth said the fort would now be named for Pfc. Roland L. Bragg, a World War II soldier who was awarded the Silver Star, rather than Confederate Gen. Braxton Bragg – whose name attached to the fort led to it being renamed to Fort Liberty in 2023.
