Apple follows Google to display ‘Gulf of America’ on maps

Apple changed its maps app on Tuesday to reflect the name change from the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, following suit with other navigation systems.

This comes weeks after Google changed the Gulf of Mexico on its maps app to the “Gulf of America” for its users in the United States following President Donald Trump’s executive order that gave the gulf the new name. Google was the first among the phone apps to update the name.

The U.S. Geographic Names Information System updated the name on Sunday. Microsoft also updated its Bing Maps app to reflect the change. Both Apple Maps and Bing Maps made the change universal to their users.

Explaining the name change, Trump said the gulf “has long been an integral asset to our once burgeoning Nation and has remained an indelible part of America.” The president also named Feb. 9, 2025, as Gulf of America Day, the same day as this year’s Super Bowl.

Additionally, Apple changed Denali in Alaska to Mount McKinley on its map. This also came from a presidential executive order.

Apple CEO Tim Cook attended Trump’s inauguration last month. His company donated $1 million to the inaugural ceremony, which was moved indoors due to cold weather.

Trump also received $2 million from Uber Technologies and its CEO Dara Khosrowshahi, respectively, a $1 million donation from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and $1 million each from Amazon and Meta toward the ceremony.
