Larson, 76, was in the middle of a floor speech when he stopped speaking mid-sentence. The ranking member of the Ways and Means Committee was waving his hand in the air, then immediately brought it down and struggled to finish his sentence with long pauses between words. The clip of his episode subsequently made the rounds on social media and revived discussion on term limits for members of Congress.

The representative explained in a statement Tuesday that 15 years ago, while he was still in office, he received a heart valve replacement for a deformity he was born with. According to Larson, “people with this condition can later develop symptoms such as the momentary change in speech or movement.” Doctors evaluated Larson following the incident and diagnosed him after several rounds of tests, ultimately giving him medication to prevent a seizure in the future.

“I will be able to resume an active schedule, including my duties as a Member of Congress, beginning tomorrow, when I plan to be present and voting on the House floor,” Larson wrote. “I am looking forward to getting back to work for the people of Connecticut’s First District.” 

Larson’s office said in a statement on the day of the incident that the seizure was considered “an adverse reaction to a new medication.”  

Monday was Larson’s second floor speech on the subject of Elon Musk in recent days. Larson and his committee have raised a red flag that Musk “gained access to the Department of the Treasury systems that deliver Social Security benefits” via his position at the Department of Government Efficiency. The Ways and Means Committee expressed concern “that the DOGE will soon turn its attention to the Social Security Administration.”

Larson is entering his 13th term in office. He already filed as a candidate for 2026 with the Federal Election Commission, signaling that he plans to continue to run for reelection.
